What is the
Active break?
Active breaks offer the opportunity to do something good for your body – this has been proven by numerous studies. This informational article summarizes what active breaks are and the current research findings on active breaks and their effects.

Integrate movement
- no matter where, no matter when
Whether at the office or working alone at home, you can incorporate exercise into your daily routine from anywhere. Without breaking a sweat and wearing your everyday work clothes, you can take part in active breaks and do something good for yourself and your body! Break up your long periods of sitting, get your circulation going, and reduce your tension.
The active breaks consist of simple coordination, loosening, strengthening, flexibility, and stretching exercises with low intensity. To continually provide new stimulation for body and mind, the focus will vary from session to session. These include shoulder/neck, back, legs, coordination and balance, whole body, etc. There's no limit to the variety of new movements, and boredom is guaranteed!
Everyone is invited to the active breaks - whether you're an athlete or a non-athlete, the exercises will do every body good.

Current state of research
Studies indicate that prolonged, uninterrupted sitting poses a health risk, increases premature mortality and can be a risk factor for chronic diseases (Backé et al., 2021). The rather sedentary working day of many office workers is characterized by long periods of sitting, one-sided strain and high cognitive performance. In this sense, the implementation of movement breaks in the workplace setting is clearly recommended. The effects of movement breaks in the workplace setting are listed below.
Effects of physical breaks
The longitudinal study by Kogel et al. (2014) investigated the collective and psychological effects of “moving breaks” on office workers. The participants took part in a 15-minute physical activity break once a week over a period of 9 weeks. Data on physical and mental well-being was recorded before and after the intervention. The results reported a 5% reduction in physical discomfort and significant positive effects on perceived team cohesion. 99.2% of the participants reported that they had fun in the group and 75.5% stated that the cohesion in the department was strengthened as a result of the movement breaks. The results indicate that regular physical activity breaks can have a positive effect on the health of employees.
Over an intervention period of 6 months, W.C. Taylor et al. (2016) determined the health-related effects of 15-minute physical activity breaks on office workers. A comparison was made with a control group that did not undergo any intervention. It was observed that the body mass index of the control group increased significantly, while the BMI of the intervention group remained constant over 6 months. Overall, there were significant improvements in physical activity.
In another study by W. C. Taylor et al. (2013), the test subjects took 15-minute exercise breaks every day over a period of up to one year. There were many positive changes in health behavior. Test subjects reported that general health awareness was raised, a more positive lifestyle was established, motivation for regular exercise was increased and social interactions at work improved significantly. Stress reduction was also supported. Physical effects were also seen within 6 months in the intervention group. A significant weight reduction of 8% was recorded.
Another study from 2010 by W. C. Taylor et al. (2010) has a similar study model and also reports positive health adaptations to moving breaks. The study reports a significant improvement in HDL cholesterol levels after taking a daily exercise break for 6 months. A weight loss of 7 kg was also recorded here.
The positive and health-promoting effects of physical activity breaks are also underpinned by the study by Michishita et al. (2017). This shows that physical activity can improve mental health and personal relationships. Based on the studies, it can be concluded that physical activities in the form of moving breaks have health-promoting effects and have a positive impact on the health behavior of employees. Physical activity breaks can strengthen teamwork and cohesion and are therefore recommended in the workplace setting. No undesirable side effects, which could manifest themselves in the form of sore muscles or injuries, were identified in any of the interventions. The role of the intensity and duration of a physical activity break has not yet been researched in this area. This work is therefore particularly significant as it provides new scientific results.
